GREAT NEWS IN THE WORLD OF DOUG

Wednesday 2/02/2011 Doug Update:  Doug went in to the vet this morning for his second round of dental surgery.  According to Edi, "Doug was so happy to go to the vet this morning.  He just loves everything and everybody.  What a forgiving soul he is."  He settled in to get ready for all that great attention he gets from April and Molly and Ashley and the rest of the girls at Compassionate Care Animal Hospital, where he is somewhat of a Rock Star!

Around noon, he was all prepped and ready to take a little snooze while Dr. Judi went to work on the other side of his mouth.  He was all hooked up to the monitoring equipment and the work began.  A few hours later, I received the following email from Dr. Judi Funk:

"Doug did very well - temp stayed at a good level, Oxygen concentration was great - heart was great through out the whole proceedure.  He is now the toothless wonder - there are no teeth left - I lost track of how many broken off roots we removed along with the very nasty few remaining teeth.  Once this is healed - he'll be better than ever, even with no teeth.

The ears are nearly completely cleared up - we placed some more of the slow release abx treatment in the one ear that still is a little red - we'll recheck that in 2 weeks. At that point - he's only going to need rechecks every 4 months or so.

You have to let the group know that I am so impressed that they took on Doug.  As bad as he looked initially I doubt that many groups would have given him any hope.  He has turned around and is an entirely different dog.  Life is very good for him now!!"

I don't know about anyone else, but this story makes me a little misty-eyed. It's amazing what a group of warm hearted people can accomplish when they come together with love and caring!

None of this could have been possible without all of our very generous supporters and all of the good thoughts and prayers sent Doug's way.  Thank you all!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you to Carol and all of the PAWS volunteers in Missouri who started Doug and the rest of the Missouri 11 on their way to new lives - and for taking the extra step to get Doug to the University of Missouri to get him stablized enough to travel.  They were beyond amazing to work with.

And a HUGE Thank You to Dr. Judi Funk and the wonderful staff at Compassionate Care Animal Hospital for opening their hearts (and kennels!) to Doug when we really needed them - and for always being so flexible in working with American Fox Terrier Rescue .  And Thanks also to Dr. Lidsay Merkel from the University of Minnesota for consulting on the case, and Dr. Janet Olson of the Veterinary Cardiology Services for coming in at the last minute and running the important heart tests he needed.

The biggest thank you goes to Edi and William for opening their home and their hearts to Doug when nobody was sure if he'd even be alive a week after we got him up here.  I remember asking Edi "Are you sure you want to do this?" and she responded "Well, if he only has a week, then we'll make it a good week where he'll be warm and loved.  And if it's longer, then it's longer.  But he deserves that much."

I know if Doug could talk, he'd tell everyone how lucky he feels.  He loves Edi and William and his foster sister Stella the Diva.  And Stella actually loves Doug back - as long as he remembers that SHE is the top dog!

Doug still requires medication every day (about $65/month) to keep his airways and heart working at optimal levels and he can still use your help paying for that.  If you'd like to help sponsor him for a month, please click the "Donate" button below and donate what you can via PayPal.  Or mail your donation toKathy Lauer, American Fox Terrier Rescue Treasurer, 8738 Prestwick Parkway, Brooklyn Park, MN 55443.  Remember, your donation is tax deductible.

THANK YOU!

From 1/17/2011: Doug was neutered and had the sebacious cyst removed from his neck.  Throughout, Doug had excellent EKG readings and his oxygen level stayed at 97 - 98, which is perfect for a dog under anesthesia.  Then they did dental x-rays and cleaned his ears out.  The ears were actually pretty good, and they're squeaky clean now.  Still a bit of bacteria in there, but they deep medicated to help it clear up, with a recheck scheduled in 2 weeks.

Doug's dental x-rays were as bad as we'd thought they'd be.  Lots of broken off roots in that poor mouth and more than a few abscess around the pieces of roots.  They worked on one side of his mouth and were making progress, but then his body temperature started to decrease despite the Baer warmer they were using.  Not wanting to risk his recoverary, Dr. Judi made the call to treat his mouth in two sessions.

Doug went home that night with pain medication and antibiotics and cuddled up with Edi and William and Stella.  The next day, he chewed up one of Edi's favorite socks and ate like hungry bear!  It was as if he hadn't been through anything the day before!

Doug wants to say "Thanks again" to everyone for their support.

This couldn't happen without your ongoing support.  Help us give all these wonderful dogs the gift of health.  Just click the "Donate" button below to make your tax deductible donation via PayPal.  Or mail your tax deductible donation toKathy Lauer, American Fox Terrier Rescue Treasurer, 8738 Prestwick Parkway, Brooklyn Park, MN 55443
